  1. Great discussion. One point that I would like to see more discussion around is protecting not only the patient from wrong drug/wrong dose errors but also the person doing the compounding and the checking. Early in the discussion the subject of having the protection for medication administration (as well as the gift shop) came up but we have been slow to adopt protection from making an error for the People of the IV room. We put too much value on being fast: decrease time to first dose, drive through pharmacies, setting the expectations that medications will be available without delay for patient satisfaction. Comments reflect my personal opinion.

  2. You bring up an excellent point, Rhoda. I agree, there should be more discussion around protecting the caregiver. There are 3 areas that benefit greatly from the use of technology in the IV room: 1) the patient – i.e. safety, 2) the caregiver – i.e. error prevention, 3) financial – both in preventing wasted drugs from errors and the cost associated with adverse drug events.
