POMS (Paperless Browser Based Pharmacy Order Management System) is an electronic document management (EDM) system from Integrated Informatics, Inc.
From the POMS website:
Browser enabled, no hardware to install, no software to load, no updates to manage
Totally hardware agnostic with respect to scanners, fax machines and bar codes. You can use your existing scanners, fax machines AND PCs — no need to upgrade or change Equipment can be shared and hence, there is no need for additional space POMS supports all Windows operating system including XP and [also] works in a Citrix environment Recognizes priority by OCR and routes to appropriate Pharmacist ensuring STAT orders are first; this functionality is in addition to nurses pressing specific “buttons” for specific priority Receives orders from any combination of scanners or fax machines or printer emulation Recognizes any type of barcode, fetches demographics information and populates key fields When a pharmacist finishes processing an order, another order for the same patient is presented automatically and if no order exists, the next high priority order is presented for processing Pharmacists can annotate orders and annotations become a part of the work queue for all pharmacists to see — no need to click an order to see annotations (remarks) Pharmacists can tag orders with (JCAHO COMPLIANT) customizable tags, and search by tagged order type Nurses can observe status of orders through a screensaver dashboard Work remotely from home, etc., with security and integrity POMS allows order entry across hospital clusters and workload sharing (can be based on date and time or number of orders in the queue or …).
We use POMS as our EDM system and have enjoyed quite a bit of success with it. The ability to annotate orders and re-route them for clarification and processing at a later time is great. Another benefit is being able to log into all or only a few order queues at a time, which allows decentralized pharmacists to manage their own units with ease.
