Why I dropped DropBox

I received the following email message from DropBox the other day:

ComeBackToDropbox

I’d forgotten about DropBox, which is surprising because at one time it was my file synching/file storage application of choice. At least it was until I started using SugarSync. Once I started using SugarSync I really had no need for DropBox. In fact, I was so impressed with SugarSync that I upgraded to a paid 30GB account. Don’t get me wrong, DropBox is good, but SugarSync is better.

There’s a great chart on the SugarSync website that shows the differences between many of today’s file synching applications. While there are several differences, the keys for me are the ability to synch any folder on the computer and the flexibility to synch files between computers or simply use SugarSync to backup my files to the cloud.

So for now SugarSync will remain my file synching/file storage application of choice. Perhaps I’ll dust off DropBox and give it another try. On second thought maybe not.

    Jerrry,

Does Sugarsync rate above Evernote in your opinion? They seem similar but Sugarsync rates seem more attractive. Based on your title I thought the reason for dropping was going to make reference to Dropbox’s comment asking if you needed a refresher.

    Hi Keith,

I consider SugarSync and Evernote completely different entities. Evernote is my webclipping/notetaking/audio note/collection-of-all-odd-things application of choice. I love Evernote and pay for the premium subscription. I find it most useful for clipping web pages for reference. In addition I’m able to use it for taking notes from my tablet PC.

I treat SugarSync as my file synching and backup-to-the-cloud application of choice. Once it’s set-up I use my computer just like I always would and it automatically syncs my files to the cloud and other computers or simply backs them up; depending on the configuration of the device I’m on.

So overall I think SugarSync and Evernote go hand in hand rather than one replacing the other.

I landed at the site for the Lenovo X220T article… but this SugarSync story here has really caught my attention. Never heard of it b4, but I’m about to try it.

btw, part of what makes Evernote so awesome is that it’s ubiquitous. But I’m also a fan of OneNote (for Class notes & research) and wish it also had that feature.

Using SugarSync’s Folder Sync, I might just be able to mimic Evernote’s “available everywhere” feature…

    Hi A.J. –

I am also a big fan of OneNote and use it quite often for just about everything. Have you ever tried Ever2One? It moves your Evernote notes to OneNote. I tried it, but didn’t really find it all that helpful. That doesn’t mean you won’t find a use for it.

I’ve really enjoyed SuagarSync. The more I use it, the more I’m convinced I made the right choice.

  5. Hi Jerry: should have found your blog earlier… but great to run into you at the UnSUMMIT and now have an opporutity to read what you write!

Online backup is one of those things I have wanted to do for a while, but never pulled the trigger. Just had an iPhone app get me signed up with DropBox, so this post caught my eye… thanks for the info and link to SugarSync…let alone some of the interesting info on Evernote…

    Cheers, Grant
